Free AI Courses for Lawyers
You do not need a budget to start learning AI as a lawyer. The courses below are free to take in full (or free to audit, with an optional paid certificate) and come from universities, the American Bar Association and the two best-known legal AI companies.
Free courses are ideal for building literacy and vocabulary. They are less good at changing how you actually work: none includes live practice on your own matters or feedback from an instructor. Our suggested path is one free primer, then a short hands-on course such as the AI Lab for Lawyers, which costs €200 for eight live hours.

Questions
Free AI Courses for Lawyers: FAQ
Are free AI courses for lawyers worth it?
Yes, as a starting point. Vanderbilt's primer and the Clio and Harvey certifications give you the vocabulary and the ethical guardrails in a few hours. They will not, on their own, make you faster at drafting or research; for that you need practice on real tasks with feedback.
Can I get a certificate from a free AI course?
Clio and Harvey issue free certificates on completion. Coursera courses from Vanderbilt and Michigan are free to audit, but the certificate requires a subscription or financial aid.
Do free AI courses count for CLE credit?
Usually not, with one exception: the ABA's AI & Ethics Unleashed program is free for ABA members and qualifies for one ethics CLE hour in many states.
